Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu – 5 Days
Day 1: Cusco – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake
Your adventure begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Cusco. After leaving the city behind, we travel through beautiful Andean valleys, small traditional villages, and breathtaking mountain landscapes on the way to Soraypampa, the starting point of the trek. Along the journey, you’ll begin to appreciate the incredible scenery that makes the Salkantay route one of the most spectacular treks in Peru.
Once we arrive in Soraypampa, we begin the hike toward the stunning Humantay Lake. Surrounded by towering snow-capped mountains, the trail offers incredible panoramic views of the Andes and fresh mountain air throughout the walk. After reaching the lake, you’ll have time to relax, take photos, and enjoy the impressive turquoise waters located beneath the Humantay Glacier. Later, we return to camp in Soraypampa, where you’ll enjoy dinner and spend the night surrounded by peaceful high-altitude landscapes.
Day 2: Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Chaullay
After an early breakfast, we begin the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. The trail gradually ascends toward the famous Salkantay Pass, the highest point of the route. As you continue climbing, the views become even more dramatic, with massive glaciers, rocky valleys, and the impressive Salkantay Mountain dominating the landscape.
Reaching the summit is one of the most unforgettable moments of the trek. After enjoying the panoramic views and a short rest, we begin the descent into greener and warmer landscapes as we enter the cloud forest region. The scenery changes noticeably throughout the day, creating a unique hiking experience filled with diverse ecosystems and incredible natural beauty. By the afternoon, we arrive at Chaullay, where we enjoy dinner and rest for the night.
Day 3: Chaullay – Lucmabamba
Today’s hike is more relaxed and takes us through lush valleys filled with tropical vegetation, rivers, waterfalls, and coffee plantations. Along the trail, you’ll pass small local communities where you can observe daily life in the Andean jungle region while enjoying the warmer climate.
This section of the trek offers a completely different landscape compared to the previous days in the high mountains. Surrounded by green scenery and peaceful trails, the route allows you to fully enjoy the natural beauty of the cloud forest. In the afternoon, we arrive in Lucmabamba, where we spend the night and prepare for the next stage of the journey.
Day 4: Lucmabamba – Aguas Calientes
After breakfast, we continue hiking along scenic mountain trails and sections of original Inca pathways that once connected remote areas of the empire. Along the route, you’ll enjoy incredible views of valleys, rivers, and dense vegetation while learning more about the history of the region from your guide.
As the journey continues, the anticipation of reaching Machu Picchu grows stronger. By the afternoon, we arrive in Aguas Calientes, the town located at the base of the citadel. Here, you’ll have time to relax, explore the town, and rest before the final day of the adventure.
Day 5: Machu Picchu – Cusco
The final day begins early in the morning with a bus ride up to Machu Picchu. Watching the sunrise over the ancient citadel is a truly unforgettable experience and the perfect reward after several days of trekking through the Andes.
During the guided tour, you’ll explore the most important areas of Machu Picchu, including temples, terraces, ceremonial spaces, and ancient stone pathways while learning about the fascinating history and architecture of the Inca civilization. After the tour, you’ll have free time to take photos and enjoy the atmosphere of one of the most iconic destinations in the world.
Later, we return to Aguas Calientes to board the train back through the Sacred Valley. Upon arrival, our transportation will take you back to Cusco, ending an unforgettable 5-day journey filled with breathtaking landscapes, cultural experiences, and incredible memories from the Andes.
